A second year student at State College is majoring in music and uses a wheelchair to get around. Since he has been at State College he has been unable to use the music building on campus because it has no ramps and really tall steps. He has had others carry him into the building at times to use the facilities but considers this to be a hassle and detrimental to his music studies. State college counters that due to the age (200 years) and historical architectural significance of the building it would cost over million to add ramps to make the building ADA compliant. What do you think?

What should the length of the ramp's base be?
October 4th, 2010An engineer is designing a ramp for wheelchair entry into a building. If the ramp must reach a height of 6 feet and have an angle of elevation of 4 degrees, what should the length of the ramp’s base be?
If the angle of elevation is increased , how will this affect the length of the ramp’s base? If it is decreased, how will the length be changed?
Why do they put those bump pads at wheelchair ramps? It rattles the brains of the person in the chair!?
October 3rd, 2010As I push my wife’s wheelchair from the handicap parking space up onto the sidewalk, she always has to endure the "gubbleuggleuggleuggle" of the wheels rolling over that stupid yellow rubber bump pad. What the heck is the purpose of those?
best wheelchair ramp?
October 2nd, 2010Building a portable wheelchair ramp?
October 1st, 2010I need a folding wheelchair ramp to get my son’s 60-lb wheelchair in and out of our SUV. Ordinarily I just lift it, but I’m pregnant with out second baby and my midwife tells me I should under no circumstances lift more than 35 lb while pregnant. School starts in two weeks and since I’m the one who takes him to and from school every day, I have to be able to get the chair in and out of the car without picking it up.
I’ve looked around online and called our wheelchair supply company and they all seem to run 0-00. I don’t have that kind of disposable cash to drop on a ramp and I’ve not been able to find helpful DIY instructions for a ramp that will fit into the car to travel with the chair. Does anyone have instructions for a ramp that can do what I need it to do and still fit into the back hatch of my car with the chair?
My neighbor is not LDS; but she is old and frail and she did need a wheelchair ramp built on her house.?
October 1st, 2010I cannot physically help, but I made some calls and several members and the missionaries built the ramp. I just got a rather blistering phone call from a Sister about how our resources should be for members. I was so mad at her that I am shaking, Is she right?

Vectors question. A wheelchair carrying a man is resting on a ramp with an angle of inclination x…?
May 22nd, 2010A wheelchair carrying a man is resting on a ramp with an angle of inclination x. To keep the chair from sliding, it is pushed by a man with a force of 100N along the ramp and a frictional force of 25N is also acting up the ramp. If the mass of the chair and the ramp is 80kg, find the angle of the inclination of the ramp with the horizontal to maintain the equilibrium.

how do you find different lengths for an angle?
May 16th, 2010for example if there was an 8degree angle(at vertex) and the lengths of the triangle were 11, 80, and 80. How could you find different lengths for the angle 8?
for example if the question was,
a wheelchair ramp must rise 80 cm to meet the front door of a building. If the angle of elevation is not to exceed 8 degrees, what is the minimum horizontal length of the ramp?

how to build a wheelchair ramp?
May 12th, 2010Wheelchair users how do you cope with icy sidewalks and snow in the winter?
May 10th, 2010I wondered that a few times when I almost slipped on a icy ramp or handicap access door. Are the wheels on the chair snow and ice resistant?
Well the slipping instances happened at my college and besides the handicap accessible doors never working properly I’ve also questioned about if a student with a severe handicap such as the use of a wheelchair needed to use the ramps, etc and there’s ice on the ramps and I slip; I can’t imagine how it’s like for them. For safety reasons I’m glad we don’t have many wheelchair users at the college.

Are there any other wheelchair users who have travelled from Bridgwater to Cheltenham by train?
May 8th, 2010I’m off for a week to Cheltenham, and I’m travelling alone by train. I’ve booked assistance so that I have ramps to get on and off the trains, but I’m terrified that I’ll be forgotten, not helped of the traiun and end up in Birmingham where the service terminates.
How Long Must the Ramp Be…MATH?
May 7th, 2010The doorsill of a campus building is 5 feet above the ground. To allow wheelchair access, the steps in front of the door are to be replaced by a straight ramp with a constant slope of 1/12. How long must the ramp be?
The question goes on to add: THE ANSWER IS NOT 60 FEET.
I got 60 feet as the measure of the ramp but according to the textbook, the exact answer is 60.2 feet.
How does one get the exact measure of 60.2 feet from the given data in the application?

What exactly is a chip fund?
April 28th, 2010My local paper advertised the following in the classified section:
"County Chip Fund now available for home owners or those shopping for a home. Funds available are 0,000 home repairs (furnaces, AC’s, wheelchair ramps, handicapped accessible bathrooms, roofing, & septic systems). Private rehab 0,000 (windows, siding, furnaces, plumbing, heating, electric). Home buyer rehab downpayment assistance 7,000 (downpayment and home repairs). Contact County Planning for more information."
What does that mean?
Would it creep you out if you found out your vacation condo used to be a senior independent living home?
April 28th, 2010That DOES explain the lack of a lake view from the condo and the silly wheelchair ramps that are way too steep to be used, but it doesn’t explain why the place was built without any elevators.
